All children are encouraged to think clearly and logically and to develop an enjoyment of this subject. A wide range of mathematical material is used within the school. Computer programmes are also used to help provide a feel for number. The children are given the opportunity to extend their skills through whole class direct teaching, guided group teaching, differentiated group tasks and individual assistance.

We use a wide range of practical equipment and ensure that pupils gain practical experience before tackling more formal written tasks. We aim to enable children to apply and manipulate all aspects of mathematics in order to solve problems in practical situations.

‘Teachers have confident subject knowledge and use this to ensure that pupils use mathematical vocabulary correctly.’ Ofsted 2007

‘Activities are dynamic and challenging and the experiences and learning appear likely to live with the pupils for years to come.’ Ofsted 2003

‘Moved on to doing complicated addition and subtraction from verbal problems. The children were the top ability group and their understanding was quite awe inspiring!’ Governor Observation 2006
